Collective management of copyright makes it easy for businesses to obtain permission to perform and play music in public, creating value for composers, lyricists, songwriters and music publishers.

"Payday" for composers, lyricists and music publishers

Wednesday, March 16, is "payday" for TONO members. On that day, TONO will pay a total of NOK 101,6 million to rights holders at home and abroad.

Of this amount, NOK 47,8 million goes to the 23,547 TONO members who receive a settlement and NOK 52,2 million goes to music creators in other countries. As always, money is also set aside for currently unidentified rights holders and works, currently unregistered works, non-members and disputed rights. This time, this is NOK 1,5 million.

– TONO negotiates, licenses, invoices, processes music reports and settles important revenues to those who create Norwegians' favorite music, whether Norwegian or foreign music creators. The size of the settlements from the various areas of use varies from quarterly settlement to quarterly settlement. This time, it is music and film streaming services in Norway and abroad that constitute by far the largest area, with more than three times the settlement amount for streaming services as for radio, says TONO's communications director, Willy Martinsen.

Although streaming services constitute the largest billing area this time, it is important to note that most TONO members do not have large payouts from here.

– It is easy to release music digitally, and many do it. It is gratifying that many are able to do so, but the challenge is that it is very difficult to break even in the amount of music that is released. We also see this in the TONO settlements. A few authors have good income from streaming services, while the vast majority receive small settlements, says Martinsen.
