Marte Wulff recently released her fifth solo album. She's going to be at festivals this summer. We asked her a few questions.

What was the name of the first song you wrote?
I think it was called something like "Think again », and it was inspired by a melody I heard on the TV series The Fraggles.
What was the name of the last song you wrote?
The last one I wrote was actually in English for some reason, it just happened that way and it was finished very quickly. It's about my mother who got sick and died quite recently, and I think I called it “Old Hands”.
What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on music for, and planning, two different collaborative projects that I will be releasing music with. I have also slowly started writing for my sixth solo album, as well as a few other types of small texts that will hopefully turn into something bigger in time.
What is your career highlight so far?
It's without a doubt when I got to perform my last solo album. Elongation for 500 people in Kilden Concert Hall in Kristiansand together with KSO (Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra). All the music was specially written for, and recorded with, a symphony orchestra. To be able to do it live was really great.
How do you create songs?
I try not to get in the way when they come to me in little bits here and there. Melodies often come easily, and then I find the chords, at the same time or afterwards. I record little snippets all the time. Lyrical ideas often require more post-processing, but it is also one of the things I find most rewarding to work on. For me, it is important that I feel like I have something to convey.
Do you have a favorite instrument that you write music on?
I prefer to play piano, but alternate between it and guitar. I think it's a bit more varied that way.
What do you do when you're not making music?
Then I write other things alone or in groups, spend time with people I love or like, read books, meditate daily, try to develop myself in as many areas as possible, take various courses, cycle around Oslo or find some nice nature or travel to other cities to see things and maybe hear a concert or two.
What is your greatest musical experience?
Hearing my own songs performed by a symphony orchestra for the first time actually surpasses most things.
Is there anything we should have asked you about?
You could ask me if there are any things I would like to do more of, or if there is anything else I could consider working on later?
And what is your answer to that question?
Yes! I would like to write more lyrics and songs for others too, upon request, and I would like to make music for film and theatre, write stage texts and other texts, play in more bands, sing for other people in the studio and get more challenging artistic assignments and tasks in different areas. To name a few. Thank you very much!
